[UPDATE 12pm 11/3/2021: The 45MH/s hash rate reported was not in the Dagger-Hashimoto algorithm used for mining ETH. Instead, it was allegedly in mining Octopus, a newer cryptocurrency based on an algo that NVIDIA has yet to detect and block. NVIDIA’s mining block remains unbypassed.]

NVIDIA announced the GeForce RTX 3060 along with a mining limiter that halves its hash rate to lower its appeal to miners. However Chinese cryptominers have apparently found a way around it to unleash the full mining performance of the GeForce RTX 3060, which is apparently a pretty good 45MH/s.

NVIDIA’s claim of halving the performance in ETH mining seems to be right on the money, as before the modded vBIOS, the GeForce RTX 3060 could only mine at 22~23MH/s with the Dagger-Hashimoto algorithm. However their confidence in the fact that the mining block cannot be bypassed has proven misplaced, as the hash rate limiter has been overcome in less than a month.

Vietnamese miners have even reportedly managed to pull 50MH/s with the GeForce RTX 3060, which is bad news for the availability of what’s supposed to be NVIDIA’s most affordable GeForce RTX 30 series card. For comparison, the pricier GeForce RTX 3060 Ti pulls around 60MH/s.

The hash rate limiter is supposed to comprise of a secure handshake between the driver, the GPU itself and the vBIOS, which does sound extremely hard to crack. However as has been proven time and again, there will always be a way where there’s money to be made.
