AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT is slower than RX 5700 XT at Ethereum mining!

This is probably the only time that we are happy that a newer product is slower than its predecessor. The AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT is reportedly a poorer Ethereum mining GPU than the Radeon RX 5700 XT, offering only 43MH/s versus the latter’s 54.3MH/s.

The Radeon RX 6700 XT’s narrower 192-bit memory bus might be the limiting factor when it comes to its mining performance. Ethereum mining is rather sensitive towards memory bandwidth, and the Radeon RX 5700 XT does tout a wider 256-bit memory bus, similar to the higher-end Radeon RX 6800 series and RX 6900 XT cards.

Speaking of which, the Radeon RX 6800 cards offer around 60MH/s. AMD doesn’t apply a hash rate limiter on their cards, unlike NVIDIA, which does mean that the Radeon RX 6700 XT’s “slow” mining performance is still close to double that of the GeForce RTX 3060. With that said, the Radeon RX 6700 XT supposedly mines Ravencoin and other altcoins at about the same rate as the GeForce RTX 3060, as NVIDIA doesn’t apply a hash rate limiter across all cryptomining algorithms.

Further optimizations should bring the Radeon RX 6700 XT’s hash rate to around 48MH/s in Ethereum, but I do believe that miners would probably just get the higher-end cards which aren’t exactly that much more power hungry.
