HUAWEI has been pushing their HarmonyOS really hard, with it slated to be the third major mobile OS, after Android and iOS. Currently, HarmonyOS has yet to make a global appearance, but it is reportedly going to be picked up by at least three smartphone manufacturers.

While the other phone makers set to offer HarmonyOS 2.0 devices were not mentioned, my guess would be Xiaomi, OPPO and HUAWEI themselves, as they are the leading brands in the Chinese market.

It is worth noting that aside from HUAWEI, both Xiaomi and OPPO have full access to Google Mobile Services, so it will be interesting to see their plans for HarmonyOS 2.0 devices in the global market. I think Xiaomi might be looking at HarmonyOS 2.0 as a backup plan, in the event that they get targeted by the US government again, after the recent fiasco with the investment blacklist.

HUAWEI is reportedly looking at adding support for more chipset makers including MediaTek and Qualcomm, which will allow other phone makers to easily adopt the operating system. It might also be due to the fact that even HUAWEI themselves are running out of Kirin chipsets, since they can’t make them anymore.

About 300 million devices are slated to be running HarmonyOS by the end of this year, of which 200 million will be made by HUAWEI. HUAWEI apparently has plans to update a number of HUAWEI and HONOR devices to HarmonyOS 2.0, so they might be counting them to come to that number.

On top of bringing the new operating system to their existing lineup, the Chinese tech giant has also released the HUAWEI Mate 40 Pro 4G running HarmonyOS 2.0 out of the box, and there are also rumors of the HUAWEI P50 series arriving with the new operating system as well.

HUAWEI’s representative admits that they need industry partners to adopt the platform to make it successful. It will take another one or two years before HUAWEI can boast of a competitive ecosystem with HarmonyOS, but they are definitely trying. HarmonyOS 2.0 is slated to make its debut this 2nd June, so we will see how the devices turn out.
