Samsung smartphones offers the fastest download speeds according to Opensignal

Opensignal’s analysis of the download speeds experienced by smartphones revealed that Samsung smartphones offer the fastest download speeds as compared to Apple and HUAWEI devices. With a gap of up to 12 Mbps faster than the next vendor, Samsung has made quite the impressive showing in Opensignal’s tests.

Across the 40 countries where Opensignal collected their data, Samsung smartphones were top dogs when it came to download speeds in 35% of the countries. 17.5% of the countries saw Apple users enjoying offering the fastest download speeds. Meanwhile, HUAWEI tied for first spot in 17.5% of the countries. In Malaysia, Samsung users on average enjoy 1.3 Mbps faster speeds than HUAWEI users, and 3.3 Mbps faster than Apple users.

Opensignal also categorized the smartphones into tiers, with high-tier referring to LTE Cat.16 and above support, mid-tier for LTE Cat.5 to Cat.15 support and low-tier which sees entry level devices with support for LTE Cat.4 and below. In these categories, every major smartphone maker tested here comes up on top in one of the tiers. Samsung is fastest in the high-tier, Apple in the mid-tier, and HUAWEI in the low-tier. A major caveat though is that Apple’s “mid-tier” contenders are often priced similarly to Samsung and HUAWEI’s “high-tier” offerings.

Last but not least, Opensignal also analyzed the average download speed experience for smartphone users in 73 countries. Malaysians are enjoying on average 19.9 Mbps with high-tier devices, while mid-tier devices deliver up to 13.8 Mbps and low-tier smartphones offer 12.3 Mbps. As a consolation, Opensignal’s data also revealed that high-tier smartphones deliver 11.1ms (18%) lower latency than low-tier smartphones, and 14% faster than mid-tier smartphones.
