We Malaysians have been enjoying a tax holiday period for a while now, which saw the prices for virtually everything dropped as they no longer account for the 6% GST. Unfortunately however, this tax holiday is about to come to an end. Starting 1st September 2018, we will be seeing the Sales and Service Tax (SST) get implemented here in Malaysia.

While it’s obvious that prices of many different goods will be affected but I’m sure many of you are wondering to what extent SST will affect the prices for electronics and games here in Malaysia. According to the official document, we now know what to expect from it.

The following is the amount of tax which will be levied on specific items which we feel is worth highlighting:

SST Tax Rate on Products

  • Mobile Phones (Including Smartphones) = 5%
  • Laptops = 5%
  • Flash Drive = 5%
  • Modem = 5%
  • Headphones / Earphones = 10%
  • Monitors = 10%
  • Microphone = 10%
  • HDDs = 10%
  • Camera (DSLR, compact, camcorder, etc.) = 10%
  • Camera Lens = Exempted
  • TV = 10%
  • Electronic Games = 10%
  • Board Games = 10%

It’s interesting to note that while cameras of all kinds will be subjected to a 10% tax rate, the lenses for interchangeable lens cameras are exempted. Another thing worth noting is that with HDDs, it’s actually listed on the official document as “Computer Hard Disk”. There is no specific mention of SSDs but one would have to assume that it will have the same SST rate at 10%.

If you want to check out the full list of items in the SST list to see how much the tax rate is or if it’s exempted, click right here to find out.
